MattMadeMe didn’t begin with a business plan. It began with a new printer, a simple duck, and the practical instinct to see what the machine could do.

I’ve spent my career where hardware, software, and manufacturing meet. Long before desktop 3D printers made the technology feel approachable, I was working in a world where tolerances matter, systems have to cooperate, and every design decision needs a reason. So when that first duck came off the printer, I was looking at the process. My wife saw the personality.

She loved it. I made another for her, then another—each one shaped around a shared memory, an inside joke, a hobby, or a person we knew. The ducks became a way for us to say, “I saw this and thought of you.” Somewhere along the way, making them became part of our love language.

Cruising gave the flock a world beyond our home. On a ship, a little duck can be a surprise, a gift, a conversation starter, or a tiny traveler passed from one person to the next. We began to see what we had seen in each other: people recognized themselves and the people they loved in these characters.

Today I sculpt each duck with that same balance of discipline and play—working out the form, color, expression, and print details until the character feels right. They’re produced in small batches with an engineer’s attention to detail, but their real job is much simpler: make someone smile, help someone feel seen, and give one person a playful way to say, “This made me think of you.”

That is the story of MattMadeMe: something precise made joyful, something personal made to be shared, and one test print that became a growing flock.
